SHANNEN DOHERTY is ready to be a mom, and plans to adopt within the year!

The 41-year-old former "Beverly Hills, 90210" star – who wed photographer KURT ISWARIENKO last October – has finally put her wild-child past behind her, insiders say, and hears her biological clock ticking.

"Shannen would love to have children the natural way, but she knows the risk of birth defects is higher at her age, and that scares her," said an insider.

"While she hasn't completely ruled out giving birth, she's more interested in exploring her options with adoption. She knows there are many children who need a good home, and she'd love to provide that. Shannen also thinks that adopting a child would help fix her longtime ‘bad girl' image and get her acting career back on track."

The former "Charmed" star – who was busted for writing bad checks in the early 1990's and suspicion of drunk driving in 2000 – separated from troubled actor ASHLEY HAMILTON in 1994 after five months of marriage.

Her 2002 marriage to RICK SALOMON – PARIS HILTON's partner in an infamous sex tape – was annulled in 2003. She tied the knot with Kurt, 37, last october, and footage of the wedding will air on her new WE reality show, "Shannen Says."

"Shannen really wants the show to take off," said the source. "She's already telling producers she'll let them film the adoption of a child in Season 2. She's happier than ever, and she and Kurt can't wait to add a new member to their family!"
