Found part of the answer about Firefox. The stable release came out Jan 28.

The versions on your Uni computers were probably beta releases.

They put out beta releases while they're still working out the bugs. That may be why the uni computers were running so slow.

All I can figure out about my checking the Mozilla site is that I might have gotten a cached page. That doesn't actually make much sense but it's all I can come up with.

The main reason all these sites are herding everyone to upgrade is that there's a pretty serious security fix in IE8 and FF3.6.

LOL I thought you knew my rules- you can't deprive me of my blondness when you're so blonde yourself! Image

Now I'm confused, because I think we're using FF 3.5. Anyhow, it was just incredibly slow and somewhat confusing, I didn't find anything there that was better than IE.

I can't imagine why your Uni computers are slower with FF than IE.

FF is a smaller program. IE is kinda like slicing tomatoes with an axe.

I'm wondering... did it launch slower or did it load pages slower?

Did you try them back to back, on the same pages?

On my machine, they start up in about the same time. FF seems to come up just a little faster but it's so close it would be hard to tell.

FF tends to load most web pages just a bit faster, too.

The difference is usually small, though. Most of the time you have to be a bit of a geek to notice.

I'd suggest trying FF for a couple of weeks. You can always take it off.

If it's gonna be either that or IE8 and you have worries about an IE upgrade, then there aren't a lot of options.

The only other option would be Opera and that's radically different from what you're used to, as well.

Besides, you're young, you're supposed to be adventurous. Eager to try new things.

I swear you're the youngest old fuddy duddy, I've ever seen.

I don't get it either, practically everyone I talk to says FF is faster and better. I think it loaded pages fast but launched really slow, but it was a few months ago, so don't hold me to that.

Question- how do you delete temporary files and cookies on FF?

LOL! Thanks, much appreciated! Image

If you go to the toolbar and click tools, there will be a dropdown menu. On that menu there's an option to clear the history.

Click on that and then on "Details" in the box that comes up. You can check off which things you want to get rid of and select a time period.

You can get rid of everything from the beginning of time, or just cookies from the last hour. Pretty much everything in between.

Everything but temp files.

For temp files, I always go through windows. Go to "My Computer".
Right click on your hard drive. Select "properties" from that menu.
Hit the button marked "disk cleanup". That will search the hard drive and find all the temp files.

Widows does strange things with temp files sometimes. This method is the most effective way to get rid of them, for most people. Using a browser app to get rid of them may leave duplicates on the hard drive.

There are special tools for us geeky types that would keep Mosad from being able to find and restore these files but few people really need those.

Of course if you'd stop surfing the porn sites, you wouldn't need these things. Image

Actually. You can avoid getting any of those cookies and history things to begin with.

Go to 'Tools' on the tool bar. Click on "Begin Private Browsing".

That should prevent it from storing any info.

You might have problems with some sites, if they need cookies to function.

If so, you're back to my first method.
